What do you think? Answer below!
This is how I do it
I have one computer dedicated as a file server. I save videos and music to folders and files on the server the same as I would save them on my computer. I make sure the permissions on the folders make them available to all computers on the network
If I want to watch a video, I go to the network folders, find the video file and double click on it. The server feeds it to whatever player runs that file (Windows Media Player, Real, whatever)
I use I-Tunes to handle my music. It works the same way as it does if the files are on your local hard drive.
I set up my server this way
I used an old computer (AMD Athalon processor) that a neighbor got rid of when they upgraded. I loaded up with RAM, put in a SATA PCI card and 2 150GB drives set up as RAID 1
I loaded OpenSuse 10.2, and installed SAMBA, which makes other Windows machines think this is a Windows file server. I used YAST to configure SAMBA and entered then user passwords and set up the shares. It has been running for over a year now with no issues
