Can I use a usb “plug-in” wireless adapter to connect an external hard drive to my network?

Question by ruggedmind76: Can I use a usb “plug-in” wireless adapter to connect an external hard drive to my network?
I need to add storage for the computers on my home wireless network. I have looked at both wireless and usb / firewire equipped external hard drives. I have seen usb plug-in wireless network adapters for computers without an internal wireless card. Could I just buy a usb equipped hard drive (or build one) and add a wireless adapter to connect it to my network for filesharing?

No. You would have 2 devices but no host. A device needs to connect to a host (usually a computer) to allow it to function.

  1. lol on bandwidth
    you can add another computer
attach the wifi and an external drive to it i guess
You could have a second computer and set up a hamachi network with
Have a shared folder in the hamachi network
Make sure that it is a g or n router/ wireless card setup and that the wireless adapters are very close to the router
the speed numbers on the box are fantasy island
Speed drops really quick with any distance
Look at powerline network adapters – they can be 200 mb/s
