Can power over ethernet damage a switch?

Question by spytechsae: Can power over ethernet damage a switch?
If I plugged a powered ethernet cord meant to provide data and power to a telephone into a switch instead, could that possibly damage the switch?

Because today many switches do not support 802.3af—or any type of inline power—the powered devices must support midspan PSE

  1. I would nomally say no but it either that or the devices are built real fragile. After a couple of good months I find myself replacing the hub on my network. I have seen this at work, board of education/computer science instructor.

  2. you bet it can damage a switch. if the switch wasnt designed to take a powered ethernet cable, absolutely it can cause it to pop.

    that’s like running 110 voltage through a car stereo speaker. it will handle it for a moment, but eventually it will fry it because of the sheer voltage.
