Question by Chaco-Yekke Downyonder: Can you connect two workstations to the same broadband network cable?
I have a laptop, which I take to work, and a big old workstation.
So far, I’ve been using the laptop for the internet and the workstation for my CAD and photo stuff, storing big files.
Could I connect both to the internet with the same cable and run them at the same time?
It’s a broadband connection.
Thanks for your help.

Yes, you can use both stations at the same time, with the same broadband connection. But, you have to split the connection. Buy a router, it allows you to use one connection for multiple computers. Good Luck.

You can have both share the connection sure, but you’ll probably need a router of some sort. Connect both machines into the router, and the router into your broadband connection and you’re good to go.
You should buy a “wireless” router. Plugged the modem and the workstation into the router and access your laptop wirelessly. Belkin has a good wireless router for around $ 50.
The easiest is by direct wired LAN UTP cable and a router (the Broadband modem may have a router in some models).
While many seem to prefer ‘wireless networks’, you will generally get faster LAN throughput speeds from LAN UTP cable rather than ‘wireless’ – and fewer security hassles – outsiders can use your Broadband connection unless you set up the security properly – such ‘eavesdropping’ is not as easily possible on direct wiring!
Recent laptops have a UTP connection, as should most newer desktops – if not you will need interface cards as appropriate.
You can use SW Firewalls, but if you want a firewall in your router, then you will need more expensive equipment.
