Do I have to add wireless internet service in order to use a Wifi Router?

Question by kiyaquriaee: Do I have to add wireless internet service in order to use a Wifi Router?
I bought a Netgear Wireless router but I am not sure if I need to have wireless service added to my internet plan with Comcast or if I can just hook it up to my internet box. I would read the manual but I bought this from walmart and the do not often allow returns on items with CDs if it is open.

Yes you need to add Wirless internet service to use a Wifi. Unless you go and use a public wifi which can be dangerous

  1. The YA User Luis (above) is incorrect. There is no such thing as Wi-fi service from cable/DSL ISP (Internet Service Provider).

Connect one end of Ethernet patch cable to the modem and the other end to wireless router. Then after the modem and wireless router are setup and powered on, open your web browser and configure and secure the wireless router.

Then follow these directions on how to secure your wireless signal so you and those you give permission can only access the wireless network.

  2. No, you do not have to “add wireless service”. All you need is your wireless router. This will distribute the wifi signals your laptops etc. Hook it up and you are wireless.
