Question by tom montanno: Does a wireless N card have a longer range when working in a G network ?
I was being “pressured” into buying a much more expensive wireless N USB card at Best Buy for my old desktop even though I told the guy I only have a G network at home. The sales person at Best Buy claims my range will improve on my desktop if I buy an N card. Is this true ?

Your rate will improve, your range will improve, given you have an N access point. I don;t think there is any direct benefit from using an N-capable network card with a G access point. The network will detect the network type, and downgrade to the G type anyway.
But for the near future, this is a good move.
What do you think? Answer below!
wireless N has more range and power period.
No. The card will operate in G mode, you will not see any benefit. Unless you plan on upgrading soon, keep it till it breaks. Unless you share very large files or view movies on other systems on the local network, are trying to connect from long distance, or you have a DS3 connection to the internet, the G is all you need at home.
