How can I get around the 10 connection limit on a peer to peer network?

Question by bretk: How can I get around the 10 connection limit on a peer to peer network?
We have a peer to peer network at work with 14 computers. We have a shared drive on 1 of the computers that everyone has to connect to. The share drive is running on WINXP MCE. From what I understand is that there is a 10 connection limit. We keep getting errors saying that no more connections can be made. Is there any way to work around this? Do I have to install server? Also, when I run a netstat on the computer it still shows computers connected to it that dont have any files open from it and have been sitting untouched for hours. I thought that the disconnect time was 15 minutes by default. Any help would be appreciated. Thankx.

If your reaching limits like this and you have that many machines then it would be cost effective to get a server and a switch for everyone. This in turn would allow you to move the data on that one machine to the server and also allow for multiple connections at a time.

Another more cost effective route is this option. Linksys offers a data server which is just a harddrive on a machine that you can connect to your switch. So your network would consist of a linksys router for internet, a switch for the multiple machines to share the connection, and this data server which would be like a server. Then you could make multiple connections to this machine as long as it is on.

Hope that helps.
