How long should a cable modem / wireless router last?

Question by Bret J: How long should a cable modem / wireless router last?
We have a Westell WireSpeed Dual Connect modem (model #B90-220030-04) and a Netgear wireless router (MR814v2). Both the modem and router are about 5 years old. Thanks!

  1. should last many many years.

Normally you would want to get a different speed before any hardware issue happens.

example change your 11.b to an 11.g

Also ensure they are both plugged into a surge protector to protect form electrical issues.

  2. Electronic devices are tricky and sometimes it is hard to tell when devices will fail. Most computer based devices have a life expectancy of around 5 years. This is usually spelled out in the instruction manual under device specifications.
