Question by Quintin: How to control another computer on my private network without setting up a VPN (virtual…?
…private network)
I have several computers networked together on my private network, which is not a virtual private network (VPN). My desire is to use computer A to control computer B through the use of my private network (i.e.. I’m using computer A, but my screen on computer A shows the screen of computer B and controls computer B). I do not want the solution to involve a VPN. Computer A and B currently share networked folders between the two of them.

I suggest you learn how to use remote desktop

If you have administrative access to the machine you can use Chris Control to do support. It auto installs VNC on the target machine. Otherwise I would recommend installing ultravnc. It has a server and a client. The server would have to be installed and running on the client machine.

Start > Run, type mstsc, hit enter. Type the name or ip address of the computer you want to control, hit enter. Done.
I will assume XP (probably same or similar for Vista): You need to run a utility called Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) on your computer A after setting up Computer B to accept remote connection requests. On B, right click on My Computer and select the Remote tab . Under Remote Desktop, check on” Allow users to connect remotely to this computer” and click OK. (You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to enable the Remote Desktop feature. )
.
On A, Open Remote Desktop Connection by clicking Start, clicking Programs or All Programs, clicking Accessories, and then clicking Remote Desktop Connection. Log in using B’s IP address or name.
.
If you don’t have it installed, download and install the Remote Desktop Connection package from Microsoft Update.
The Help and Support Center in the Start menu has lots more info.
I won’t waste a lot of space here … but if you are using windows at least XP you can easily set up for remote desktop connection. It will allow you to open a window in a session on the other computer – you won’t be controlling the actual desktop, but a secondary one that can’t be seen on that computer that acts pretty much like the general desktop. This will allow you to run programs, start applications, move files, etc.; pretty much everything you could do from the desktop. Go to programs/admin tools to find this.
Another option that I like even better – and I think fits your desires better – is any application based on the VNC protocols – UltraVNC is my favorite, and allows for unattended takeovers, simple file transfers, clipboard sharing, inline chat and more. It is a very small and simple installation from http://www.ultravnc.com. With this program you take actual control over the desktop – if the computers are in the same room you will see the mouse icon move on the screen and etc.; it’s just like you are actually in front of the machine, but you’re not!
Hope that helps – good luck!
You can either use windows remote desktop to control the other pc or a program such as realvnc http://www.realvnc.com/ With this you can install the program on both computers, making one of them the server and one the client. Then all you do is connect to the server with the client and take control of the computer screen through the client screen. This will allow you to do exactly what you want.
There is a free version which you can get http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/download.html here.
Hope that helps,
