Question by : My laptop has an RJ45 connector but no RJ11 connector and I want to hook it to dial up,how do I do it?
I want to hook to dial up with my laptop without it costing so much

Answer by Alan H
Your laptop would have to have a modem to convert the data for the phone line. The modem card would have the rj11 connector on it. You could buy a modem and then plug the rj45 in the modem and the modem into the phone line.

What’s the easiest and most flexible grid computing solution for a windows-based home network?

Question by zsitchin: What’s the easiest and most flexible grid computing solution for a windows-based home network?
I have four home computers, and I would like each computer to be able to borrow CPU cycles from the others when they are idle. For example, if my son is editing video on one computer and two other computers are idle, it would be nice if his computer could seamlessly, on demand, borrow the processing power of the idle computers. It should be invisible to the end user, not require any additional hardware, and work with any Windows program.

Answer by nothin_nyce1
You wouldn’t be able to do that.
If you’re looking to borrow memory/speed from another CPU then you might want to look into some hardcore networking stuff.

The closest thing to what you’re asking is to implement a application server-based network.
Example: At a corporation everyone uses a program to pull information from. Instead of having the application on every computer the company has in on one server that everyone pulls info from.

As far as network architecture you might want to just get a router. But you may have lots of variables like all the computers are spread throughout your house except two. Well instead of drilling holes and spreading ethernet around you could go wireless with two and hard-wire two.

You’ve got options as for as architecture but sorry about the processor/resource question.

Replacing my wireless router and cable modem?

Question by golden01: Replacing my wireless router and cable modem?
I’m thinking about replacing my very old cable modem and wireless router. I currently rent a Scientific-Atlanta cable modem from Comcast and I think its about time to replace it. My Linksys WRT54G v5 has been giving me several connection problems. My questions are: What are some of the top quality cable modems out right now? What are some of the top wireless routers out right now? (faster speeds, more coverage, reliability). Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by inconclusive_conjunction
The best cable modems are usually either Motorola Surfboards or RCA/Thompsons. I use an RCA myself. The newest routers operate at 108 Mbps, but you will need a new wireless card to realize the full speed. Any wireless router from a reputable brand, such as Linksys, Netgear, or Belkin, should perform well. If you are some distance away from the router, or on a different floor, you may want to invest in a larger, higher-gain antenna.

Linksys router?

Question by titan: Linksys router?
when you purchase a Linksys router, what are the additional costs? there must be an activation fee , right? and are there monthly charges? Is Linksys affliated with AT&T or any cable service?

Best answer:

Answer by Jay
If you get it through AT&T or your regular ISP. There will always be additional charges. Your ISP wants your computer to have only 1 computer for 1 internet. However, if you get it through that of say Bestbuy or circuit city. No additional charges will be there.

Q&A: If I buy a replacement router, do I have to make any changes on computer?

Question by B.Rabbit: If I buy a replacement router, do I have to make any changes on computer?
Hello, I’m fairly new to figuring out DIY home networking. I have a Linksys router that is several years old and may want/need to replace it in the near future with an updated model. My computers run Vista Home Premium.

If/When I do replace it, will I have to make any changes (create a new network profile) through the Network and Security Center on Vista before or after I set up the router?

It’s confusing, but I’m learning. Thanks in advance for any help or guidance you can provide.

Answer by Lucidious
No, your computer will not notice the difference unless you have set-up the old router to not provide ip addresses (ie you set them manually)

Q&A: What is a good free dnla media server for windows 7, similar to playon?

Question by adam_f_1984: What is a good free dnla media server for windows 7, similar to playon?
I am trying to use a media server that is similar to playon, but free. I bought a sony bdps570, it is dnla enabled, I’m trying to use tversity, which I do like, and found out it is not dlna. I would really like to have it hulu compatible (free, not hulu plus) and play from my library (my harddrive). If you use a particular one, please tell me why you like it. Thanks for your input.

Is possible to setup multiple access point on Linksys switch?

Question by Shawn P: Is possible to setup multiple access point on Linksys switch?
I am trying setup WiFi for Hotel Business. Currently Business has one Netgear Router with two block. I am thinking about one Linksys Switch with multiple access points.

Best answer:

Answer by Tidus Jack
Depends on situation but it is possible. I’m using Linksys WAP54G, so i describe based on it. Here it goes. Connect one of the linksys switch port to the router. Then, connect one of the switch port to a linksys wifi access point (AP). Set the first AP to ‘default mode’. Then put 2nd linksys AP within range of the 1st AP and set the 2nd linksys AP to ‘wireless repeater mode’ and put the 1st AP’s mac address. For 3rd, 4th linksys AP and so on, set the same mode as the 2nd one. I hope this answer can guide you. Good Luck.
P/S: Use the same brand for all access points that you want to use to avoid any incompatibility problem.

Question by Alex: why have i not been formally notified of the playstation network issues?
no emails, no messages on the playstation other than “undergoing maintenance”
has anyone received any actual information from sony about what’s going on?
thanks everyone, not checking the email box sounds like something i would do.

You may have not checked off the box that asks about sending emails when you first signed up to PSN. You can easily find information anyways but simply google searching it.
