Q&A: For everyone here who is fixing computers and/or managing a network for a decent living?

Question by Jeremy: For everyone here who is fixing computers and/or managing a network for a decent living?
I would like to know what secondary education you pursued in order to get such jobs. I am in high school and i know what i want to do for a living, but don’t know what secondary education and certification i might need. What do you recommend?

I want to fix/build computers, maybe moving up to a network management position and maybe later in life starting a computer fixing/custom computer building store. I am really good for my age at both hardware and software- check some of my answers.

I would also like to know of a good part time job for a 16 year old (me) looking to get his foot in the door. Do you think a Best Buy/Circuit City Job would be good? Will they take part-time 16 year olds? Or should i start putting out ads and do some fixing jobs from home?

Thanks in advance

I was lucky enough to find a cable/internet company that offered free training for entry level tech support. From there, I have worked my way up to Central Operations. No education here, besides the high school diploma. I know this doesnt help your situation, but there are some companies out there who offer entry level jobs and free training to go with.

try a trade school like ITT tech. they offer classes in electronics, information technology, graphics and design. i think you would be looking for IT, informatoin technology or something like that. i am currently attending for game design and we learned how to completely rebuild computers, build them from scratch, and how to completely maintain them all in our first quarter.

best buy/ciruit city/frys would be great places for you to get your ‘foot in the door’ working there part-time and showing them your stuff will let you advance quickly, plus you can talk with the geek squad guys and they could help you move up faster.

also, if you think you’re that good, then just ask around your neighborhood or put up ads and do some repairs for friends and family. they will spread the word, and you can charge half of what geek squad charges.
