Q&A: How to increase the geek factor of my home network?

Question by Bob the Helper: How to increase the geek factor of my home network?
Looking for projects to make my home network even more exceptionally geeky. Already have dedicated linux firewall, nas/storage server, gb ethernet to desktops. Very recently added gb ethernet fiber optic switch backbone and switched from copper to optical network cards. today’s project is to get (two gb fiber ports) link aggregation working between the switches, and from the servers to the main (backbone) switch. Trying to keep projects some combination of: straightforward, under $ 100, using open source software. prospective project also must be either semi-useful, look damn sexy on my (visio) network diagram, or (preferably) both.
RE: “how many virtualized desktops running?” Only three people here, so even with the Wii and popcorn hour (media server) running, there would be maybe four or five user-class connections, five nas servers and a linux firewall. (i hope that answers your question)
re: add a dns server
I have been considering this, have a url link for me?
anyone have any other ideas?

  1. configure your own DNS server, or maybe mail server. Not hardware but cool if you ask me.
I tried downloading numerous DNS servers and things I thought were DNS servers and what not and I cant figure the first thing out about any one of them. I got ‘em all through synaptic package manager on Linux MInt, which is what I’m currently running.

Maybe a cool seperate monitor of your firewall that gave you a running display of network statistics, like upload/download stats or something. Sorry that’s all I got. I think you got it pretty geeked out right there.
