Q&A: Will my netgear gigabit ethernet switch work without the gigabit ethernet card?

Question by 7x4life: Will my netgear gigabit ethernet switch work without the gigabit ethernet card?
I just bought a Netgear 5-port gigabit ethernet switch, model GS605. I didnt know it needed a special card, and my computers at home just have a regular ethernet card. How will this still work, if at all, if i plug it into a regular card. I will probably get the cards down the road, i just need to know if i can use it until then.

What you should have gotten was a router, not a switch.

  1. Gigabit has the capability to transfer data at 1000 Mega bits/second.

It should work with a 100Mb/s card, as well as with a 10Mb/s card.
