Question by andrew_millarkie: Why is it that when setting up a Home Network with Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP I cant get the client ..
computer to see the Host computer for file sharing or sharing printers but the network seems to work as it can share the internet connection!?!? I have checked the box to allow file sharing between the computers.
I have tried to search for the printer using printer setup and ive tried file sharing. I have also gave set both computers to use the SSID name “network”. When trying to access the host from the client through “My Network Places” it recognises the network name but when I try to access it it comes up with the error “You may not have permission to access this network”. I have tried network troubleshooter but it goes through all the checks and says it does not know how to solve my problem and that I should get help from an external source. What’s getting me down about this problem is that I studied computer networking at school. :-P

Have you actually shared anything yet? The computer sometimes won’t appear visible unless at least one directory or printer is shared, even if Filesharing is enabled.

Can one PC ping the other PC OK?

  1. Make sure the SSID names are the same on both computers… like WORKGROUP is what it usually defaults too. I have had problems before and loading the IPX protocol has taken care of those. Hope this helps If you are using wireless, make the SSID the same name as your Router.

  2. Stop the firewall of Windows XP and other firwall come with some antivirus program.
If the file sharing is work, customize the firewall rules and start the firewall again.
