Will a Linux machine work on a Windows XP home network?

Question by lucasbuckteacher: Will a Linux machine work on a Windows XP home network?
I have an home network with computers running XP. I’m wanting to setup a computer to run MythTV with the Ubuntu build of Linux (using a wireless Linksys router). Will it mesh with the network easily, and will it show up in my network places (and the XP computers on the Linux) for sharing files? Thanks for any info.

Read up on Samba, that’s what you need!

  1. Yes it will. You need to setup samba on your linux machine and make it part of the same workgroup as the XP. There are several good documentations out there on the internet. But since you are going to use Ubuntu take a look at this:
